Award of Excellence for Mirabal Center

In a ceremony held at Cardozo Law School of Yeshiva University in lower Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday December 5, were expressed words of tribute to the three Mirabal Sisters. The Housing Court Answers immediately handed a scroll of appreciation to the Centre Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community.
This recognition is based on the works that for years has been doing Mirabal Sisters Community Center for the communities of Harlem and Washington Heights, in order to preserve affordable housing.

Gina Cuevas, on behalf of Housing Court Answers, said that the Mirabal Center has played a key role in preserving affordable housing for the poor of New York.
"Mirabal Sisters Cultural and Community Center, directed and founded by Luis Manuel Tejada, is a grassroots organization, inspired by the legacy of the Mirabal sisters in their struggle against injustice in the Dominican Republic, fought strongly against the planned expansion of Columbia University, against landlords llike Pinnacle and Vantage, which seek to displace much of the communities of Harlem and Washington Heights. The Center is well known in the housing court by the presence of its members, wearing their yellow shirts and when they say out loud: The People United never be defeated, "said Gina Cuevas.

To receive this recognition attended the organization's executive director Luis Manuel Tejada, the secretary of the Board of Directors Usmerdys Valenzuela, alongo with the members Haffe Acosta and Pio Tejada.

Luis Tejada thanked on behalf of the members and the community of Upper Manhattan this gesture to recognize the struggle for social justice in a row as important as housing. Tejada specified that the Mirabal Center was the first community organization in New York City who started the fight against Pinnacle Corporation, preventing more than 20,000 families were evicted from their homes abruptly.

The Organization Answers on Housing Court (Housing Court Answers) recognizes each year one or two community organizations for social work.

Exitosa 5ta. Convención de Inquilinos en Harlem y W. Heights

El Centro Cultural y Comunitario Hermanas Mirabal, Inc. en Nueva York, celebró con éxito su 5ta Convención de Inquilinos con el tema "Conociendo Mis Derechos". Con la asistencia de más de 300 personas, el Director Ejecutivo, Profesor Luis Manuel Tejada, dio inicio al evento, seguido por la intervención del Vice-Comisionado de la División de Derechos Humanos del Estado de Nueva York Edward A. Watkins, Ericka Stalling Directora del ANHD, Sadia Rahman abogada del Centro de Justicia Urbana y Gina Cuevas de la Organización Respuestas en la Corte.

La 5ta Convención de Inquilinos de Harlem y Washington Heights logró sus objetivos planteados, dice Tejada, pues se llenaron las expectativas. Ciento de comunitarios tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender sobre sus derechos en las áreas de vivienda, laboral, medio ambiente, justicia económica, contra labrutalidad policial, justicia educativa e inmigración.

El panel estuvo integrado por la División de los Derechos Humanos del Estado de Nueva York, La Oficina del Procurador Fiscal de la del Distrito de la Ciudad de Nueva York, la Organización Repuestas en las Cortes, la Alianza para una Educación de Calidad (AQE), El Centro Cultural Sisa Pakari, la Oficina de Migración Católica, Miembros de la Ocupación de Wall Street (#OWS), el Centro de Justicia Urbana (UJC), Justicia Global, Federación de Maestros Unidos de Nueva York, Padres Abogando por los Niños, Concilio de Presidentes de las Asociaciones de Padres de las escuelas Públicas del Alto Manhattan y diez Asociaciones de Padres de las Escuelas Públicas, entre otros activistas comunitarios.

El Centro Comunitario Hermanas Mirabal tiene por tradición realizar este tipo de evento para brindar a la comunidad la oportunidad de crear poder comunitario a través de la educación, la organización y la acción directa con la formación e identificación de sus propios líderes.

Al final del día, el evento fue cerrado con un homenaje a las Hermanas Mirabal. Con décimas, poemas, cantautores y bachateros se revivió el espíritu de lucha de las Mirabal, los cuales sirven de inspiración para la lucha por la justicia social. A la vez se hizo público reconocimiento a la Sra. Ramona Torres y al defensor comunitario Andrés Mares Muro por atreverse a realizar desobediencia civil en el Capitolio de Nueva York, Albany.
